We sat down with fitness and lifestyle expert Jenna Wolfe, who has partnered with Microsoft to showcase the Microsoft Band, to get her take on healthy habits, inspiration, and what ingredient she’d be in a salad bar (hint: it’s spicy!). Read on for Part 3 of this three-part interview series.

1)     Walk to reach your step goal. It is easy, it is free, it is accessible, and we all learned how to do it years and years ago. And not just walk, but pick a number of steps that will really challenge you. And then hit that goal every- single –day, whether you’re sitting behind a desk for 8 hours, or taking a red eye back across the country, or you are out and about. So if your goal is 10,000 steps, then I don’t care what you do, you hit 10,000 steps. Because this way I know you’re at least walking about 4 miles a day, you’re at least moving in some capacity, and you’re working towards a goal.

2)     Eliminate simple carbs after dark. A great way to clean up your diet a little bit is no simple carbs after 6 PM. We do most of our damage when we’re tired at night, when we’re lazy at night, and when we’re not focused at night. We sit down at a restaurant and the bread basket comes and we’re just exhausted and we just eat. Or we want to eat carbs, we want to eat as much as possible. You can eat, but if we give ourselves boundaries—no simple carbohydrates, no sugar, no white food, nothing after 6 PM, right away you’re forcing yourself to eat better food at night. I’m not telling you to eat less, I’m telling you to eat better. So I’m not telling you not to eat carbs all day, I’m saying no simple carbs after 6.

3)     Drink 20 sips of water when you wake up. Water is so incredibly important. The first thing I do when I wake up in the morning is drink 20 sips of water—that means I swallow 20 times. Now I know I’ve gotten my 8.5-9 oz in before I do anything else the rest of the day. Now my body’s awake, my metabolism is like “Alright, here we go!” The machine is getting ready to work for me. Eventually, you want to drink half your body weight in water. But how do you do that? Start off slow.
